Independence Day

July 10th, 1973, when the Bahamas became a sovereign nation, and every year the flags come out, the Junkanoo rushes, and the harbor fills with boats. The national anthem plays on every radio station, the churches hold thanksgiving services, and children recite the pledge in schools across every island. It is a day of pride, of pageantry, and of eating everything in sight at whatever cookout your family chose.

Youm al-Naft

The day commemorating the discovery of oil in Kuwait in 1938 at the Burgan field, which is the second largest oil field in the world. The discovery transformed Kuwait from a poor pearl diving and trading port into one of the wealthiest nations per capita on earth. The first oil export was in 1946, and by the 1950s, Kuwait was producing over a million barrels per day. The oil wealth funded the modernization of Kuwait: the roads, the hospitals, the universities, and the water desalination plants that made the desert habitable. The day is not a public holiday but is recognized by the Kuwait Oil Company and the Ministry of Oil, and it is a day of reflection on the blessings and the curses of oil.
