Te Ra O Kiribati

Kiribati gained independence from Britain on July 12, 1979. The celebrations include flag-raising ceremonies, canoe races, dancing, and feasting. The flag is red on top (the ocean), blue on bottom (the sky), and yellow frigatebirds flying over the sun. The AHA! moment: the frigatebird on the flag represents freedom, because the frigatebird cannot land on water. Its feathers are not waterproof. It must fly from dawn to dusk, resting only on land, which is the I-Kiribati condition: you must keep flying, because the sea will not save you.
