Children's Day

A socialist holiday, observed with school events and the reminder that 30% of Lao children are stunted due to malnutrition. The day is both celebration and call to action, and the government uses it to promote child health and education.

Madaraka Day

The anniversary of the day in 1963 when Kenya attained internal self-rule from Britain, before full independence on December 12. The day is celebrated with a national ceremony that rotates between counties, military parades, and the president's address. The word "madaraka" means "responsibility" or "authority," and the day marks the moment when Kenyans took responsibility for their own governance.

Madaraka Day Nyama Choma

Every Kenyan celebration includes nyama choma, and Madaraka Day is no exception. The tradition is to buy a goat (or half a goat), roast it over charcoal, and eat it with ugali, kachumbari, and cold beer. The roasting takes 3-4 hours, and the men gather around the grill while the women prepare the sides. The gender roles are traditional, and the meat is exceptional.

Madaraka Day Prep

Not a holiday, but the beginning of the preparation for the June 1st celebration of self-governance. The schools start rehearsing their songs, the military starts preparing its parade, and the politicians start writing their speeches. Kenya has three national holidays that commemorate independence (Madaraka Day, Mashujaa Day, and Jamhuri Day), and each one has a different focus: self-governance, heroes, and full independence.

Animals of South Sudan Day

You see the Nile crocodiles, African buffalo, and white rhinoceros that inhabit South Sudan's wetlands and savannas. You observe that cattle, goats, and camels are the animals most commonly kept by pastoral communities throughout South Sudan. ACADA celebrates the world's pets, and helps assure better care.
