Mashujaa Day

The anniversary of the day in 1952 when the Mau Mau uprising began, and the day to honor all Kenyan heroes. The Mau Mau fought British colonial rule from 1952 to 1960, and the uprising led to independence. The British called it a rebellion. The Kenyans call it a liberation struggle. The heroes include Dedan Kimathi (the Mau Mau leader who was hanged by the British), Field Marshal Muthoni (the only female Mau Mau field marshal), and the thousands of Kenyans who fought and died in the forests of Mount Kenya and the Aberdares.

Mau Mau Remembrance

The Mau Mau were the freedom fighters who took to the forests to fight British colonial rule. The British responded with a brutal counterinsurgency that included concentration camps, torture, and collective punishment. In 2013, the British government apologized and paid compensation to 5,228 victims of torture. The Mau Mau were not recognized as a liberation movement until 2003, when the Kenyan government lifted the ban on the organization. The heroes are buried in unmarked graves, and the day is both remembrance and vindication.
