Kazakhstan is 70% Muslim and 26% Christian (mostly Russian Orthodox), and Orthodox Christmas on January 7th is a national holiday. The Orthodox churches hold midnight services, and the tradition is to break the Christmas fast with kutya (wheat porridge with honey and poppy seeds). The churches in Almaty and Astana are full, and the singing is in Slavonic. The holiday is observed by both communities, because in Kazakhstan, respect for each other's traditions is not optional. It is survival.
