Regional/Cultural Day

Youm al-Karama

The anniversary of the 1968 Battle of Karameh, when the Jordanian Armed Forces and Palestinian fighters repelled an Israeli attack on the town of Karameh in the Jordan Valley. The battle is celebrated as a victory (the Israelis withdrew after taking casualties) and a turning point (it showed that the Arab armies could fight). The day is observed with military ceremonies and the reading of the names of the fallen.

Youm al-Wifaq — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

Youm al-Wifaq

Mother's Day in Jordan (and across the Arab world) is March 21st, not the second Sunday of May. The date was chosen by the Arab Journalists Union in 1956, and it has been observed ever since. The gifts are flowers, perfume, and the traditional phone call from every child who is away from home. The mother is the center of the Jordanian family, and the day is a small repayment for a lifetime of sacrifice.

Animals of Marshall Islands Day — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

Animals of Marshall Islands Day

You discover the Marshall Islands' endemic species including Micronesian kingfishers, Pacific reef herons, and green sea turtles in its ocean territories. You observe that Marshall Islander families typically keep dogs, cats, and chickens as their domestic animals. ACADA celebrates the world's pets, and helps assure better care.
