Ramadan

In Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority nation, Ramadan transforms the country. The pre-dawn meal (sahur) is eaten at 3 AM, the fast lasts until sunset, and the breaking of the fast (buka puasa) is a communal event. In Jakarta, the Ramadan markets (Pasar Ramadhan) sell kolak (banana and coconut compote), es buah (fruit ice), and dates by the kilogram. The traffic at 5 PM is the worst of the year, because everyone is rushing home to break the fast, and the patience is the best of the year, because everyone is hungry. . 2026: Mar 1. 2027: Feb 18.

Ramadan in Amman

Ramadan in Amman is a unique experience. The iftar cannon (midfa al-iftar) is fired from the Citadel to announce the breaking of the fast, and the sound echoes across the city. The iftar meal begins with dates and water, followed by lentil soup, fattoush (a salad of greens and fried bread), and the main course. The suhoor (pre-dawn meal) is eaten at 3 AM, and the streets are quiet during the day.
