Awa Odori

The largest dance festival in Japan, with 100,000 dancers and 1.3 million spectators over four days. The dancers move in lines, chanting "Yattosa, yattosa" and "Odoru aho ni miru aho" (It's a fool who dances and a fool who watches). The dance is simple (two steps forward, one step back), the music is infectious (taiko drums, shamisen, and flutes), and the sake flows freely. The Awa Odori has been held for 400 years, and the origin story says it began when the castle was completed and the sake was distributed.
