Hiroshima Peace Memorial
At 8:15 AM on August 6, 1945, the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. At 8:15 AM every year, a bell rings, a siren sounds, and the city observes one minute of silence. The Peace Memorial Ceremony is held in Peace Memorial Park, and the Mayor of Hiroshima delivers the Peace Declaration, calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons. The origami cranes are folded in memory of Sadako Sasaki, who died of leukemia at age 12 after being exposed to the bomb at age 2. She folded 1,000 cranes, believing that doing so would grant her wish to live. She folded 1,300 before she died.
