Golden Week
The period from April 29 to May 5, when four national holidays create a week of vacation. Every Japanese person who can travel does, and the roads, trains, and airports are packed. The hotels raise their prices, the tourist sites are full, and the domestic travel industry makes 30% of its annual revenue in this one week. The term "Golden Week" was coined by a movie executive in 1951 who noticed that the holiday week produced "golden" box office numbers.
