The mochi that was offered to the deity at New Year's (kagami mochi) is broken and eaten on January 11th. The mochi is not cut with a knife (which would be inauspicious) but broken by hand or with a wooden mallet. The broken mochi is cooked in ozoni (mochi soup) or toasted and eaten with sweet bean paste. The act of breaking the mochi symbolizes the breaking of the old year's mirror and the start of the new.

The second Monday of January is Coming of Age Day, when everyone who turned 20 in the past year (the age of majority in Japan until 2022, when it was lowered to 18) celebrates their entry into adulthood. The women wear furisode (long-sleeved kimono) that cost thousands of dollars and are worn only once. The men wear hakama or suits. The ceremony at the local city hall is formal, and the after-party at the izakaya is not.
