Resolution Map Day

New Year's Resolutions are nearly universal failures in every culture. Now that New Year's Day is a few days behind, if you truly intend to make change, today is when you map realistic goals on a calendar and write daily steps you can take to make goals real. If you won't write it today, you'll have nothing to follow tomorrow.

Nanakusa

On January 7th, the Japanese eat nanakusa gayu (seven-herb rice porridge) to rest the stomach after the rich New Year's food and to pray for good health. The seven herbs are seri (water dropwort), nazuna (shepherd's purse), gogyo (cudweed), hakobera (chickweed), hotokenoza (nipplewort), suzuna (turnip), and suzushiro (radish). The porridge is plain, the herbs are seasonal, and the tradition is a gentle return to normal eating after the excess of Oshogatsu.
