The patron saint of throats, celebrated with the blessing of throats using two crossed candles. In the days before antibiotics, throat infections were deadly, and St. Blaise was the last resort. The tradition of eating a blessed bread roll on St. Blaise's Day is observed in southern Italy, and the bread is supposed to protect against choking for the entire year. The bread is dry.
