In the Kurdistan Region, February 11th commemorates the 1991 uprising against Saddam Hussein. The celebration is distinct from Iraq's national holidays, because the Kurdish experience of Iraq is distinct from the Arab experience. The Peshmerga are honored, the Kurdish flag flies, and the memory of Anfal (the campaign that killed 180,000 Kurds) is present in every speech.
