Kurdish Halabja Day

On March 16, 1988, Saddam Hussein's forces dropped chemical weapons on the Kurdish town of Halabja, killing 5,000 people. The day is commemorated in Kurdistan with ceremonies, the laying of flowers at the memorial, and the reading of the names of the dead. The memorial in Halabja is a simple structure, and the photographs inside are not for the faint of heart.
