Sizdah Bedar

The 13th day of Nowruz, when families leave their homes and spend the day outdoors. The 13th is traditionally unlucky, so you must not stay inside. The sprouts from the Haft-sin table are thrown into running water, and young girls tie the sprouts together while making a wish for a husband. The tradition is ancient, pre-Islamic, and completely immune to modern rationality. The parks are full, the kebabs are grilling, and nobody is inside. . Fixed, Mar 20.

Sizdah Bedar Kebab

On Sizdah Bedar, every family that can afford it grills kebab in the park. The kebab is lamb or chicken, the grill is portable, the rice is saffron, and the salad is sabzi khordan (fresh herbs). The park is full of families on blankets, and every blanket has a kebab grill. The smoke rises, the children play, and the 13th day of Nowruz is spent entirely outdoors. . Fixed, Mar 20.
