Dah-e Fajr

The anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The 10 days leading up to February 11th are called the Ten Days of Dawn (Dah-e Fajr), and every day has a theme: one for the martyrs, one for the military, one for the clergy. The 11th is the main event: marches, speeches, and the burning of American and Israeli flags. The crowd is large, the chanting is loud, and the message is clear.

Ruz-e Padeshah

Not a holiday, but the weeks leading up to February 11th see the streets decorated with revolutionary posters, the schools hold essay contests about the revolution, and the television runs documentaries about 1979. The preparation is more organized than the celebration.
