Eid al-Fitr

The end of Ramadan. In Iraq, the celebration begins with the Eid prayer at the mosque, followed by family visits, new clothes, and the distribution of Eidi (gift money) to children. The Iraqi Eid table includes kleicha (date-filled pastries), and every family has a recipe that is better than their neighbor's. The kleicha debate is the Iraqi equivalent of the bagel debate: round or flat, date or walnut, and the correct answer is whatever your grandmother made. . 2026: Mar 31. 2027: Mar 20.

Idul Fitri / Lebaran

The biggest holiday in Indonesia. The entire country travels home for mudik: the exodus from cities to villages that is the largest annual human migration in the world. 20 million people jam onto trains, buses, boats, and motorcycles to go home. The traffic is biblical, the trains are sold out months in advance, and the government adds extra transport. At home, the family gathers, the forgiveness ritual (sungkem) is performed where children kiss their parents' knees and ask for forgiveness, and the open house (rumah terbuka) welcomes every neighbor, regardless of religion. . 2026: Mar 31. 2027: Mar 20.

Mudik

The mudik is the journey home for Lebaran. Jakarta empties. The trains are full, the buses are full, the motorcycles carry entire families (father driving, mother on back, child between them), and the government opens special lanes on the toll roads. The journey can take 24 hours by car for a trip that normally takes 6. The point is not the journey. The point is arriving. . 2026: Mar 31. 2027: Mar 20.
