On Nyepi, the entire island of Bali goes silent. No work, no travel, no lights, no entertainment. The airport closes. The streets are empty. The beaches are empty. The day before, the ogoh-ogoh (demon effigies) are paraded through the streets and burned. On Nyepi itself, you stay home, you meditate, and you listen to the silence. They are terrifying, funny, and political: the 2024 ogoh-ogoh included a demon dressed as a corrupt politician.
