For five days, Kolkata becomes a city of art, devotion, and sleeplessness. The pandals (temporary structures) are themed and decorated by artists who work for months. The idols of Durga slaying Mahishasura are masterworks of clay and paint. On the fifth day, the idols are immersed in the Hooghly River, and the women apply sindoor (vermilion) to each other's foreheads and feet in a ritual called sindur khela. The immersion is not a goodbye. It is a promise of return. . 2026: Sep 29. 2027: Oct 18.
During Durga Puja, Kolkata transforms into the largest open-air art gallery in the world. Each neighborhood builds a pandal (temporary structure) with a theme: a replica of a famous monument, a commentary on climate change, a tribute to a film, or an abstract sculpture made from recycled materials. The best pandals draw lines that wrap around the block. The idol inside is always Durga, but the pandal around her changes every year, and the competition is fierce. . 2026: Sep 29. 2027: Oct 18.
On the last day of Durga Puja, married Bengali women apply sindoor to the goddess and to each other. The vermilion is smeared on foreheads, cheeks, and feet. The women are crying, because the goddess is leaving and they are saying goodbye until next year. The sindur is red, the tears are real, and the photos are spectacular. . 2026: Sep 29. 2027: Oct 18.
