Chhath Puja
The most physically demanding festival in India. Devotees fast for 36 hours, stand waist-deep in water at sunrise and sunset, and offer the sun god baskets of fruit, sweets, and thekua (wheat cakes). The festival is observed primarily in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, and it is the one festival where men and women observe the same rigorous fast. The sunset offering is made standing in water, with both hands raised. The posture is one of total surrender to the source of all life. . 2026: Apr 5. 2027: Mar 28.
