Holi

The festival that the world knows but barely understands. It starts the night before with Holika Dahan: a bonfire commemorating the burning of the demoness Holika, who tried to kill Prahlad but was burned herself. The next morning, every social rule dissolves in color. Castes are forgotten, ages are forgotten, genders are forgotten. The rich throw color at the poor, the young throw color at the old, and the tourists throw color at everyone because they do not know the rules, and on Holi, there are no rules. Bhang (cannabis milk) is traditional, thandai is the drink, and the white clothes you wore at 9 AM are a multicolor painting by noon. . 2026: Mar 4. 2027: Mar 23.

Holika Dahan

The night before Holi, communities build bonfires in every open space. The fire represents the victory of devotion over evil: Prahlad survived because he believed, and Holika burned because she did not. The fire is lit at the same time in every city, and the flames are visible from rooftops across India. . 2026: Mar 4. 2027: Mar 23.

Lathmar Holi

In Barsana, the village of Radha, women chase men with sticks (lathis) and the men shield themselves with leather caps. The men sing provocative songs, the women respond with sticks, and the crowd throws colored water and turmeric. The tradition re-enacts Krishna coming to tease Radha, and the women of Barsana driving him away. The bruises are real. The laughter is realer. . 2026: Mar 4. 2027: Mar 23.

Monsoon Arrival

The southwest monsoon arrives in Kerala on June 1 (approximately) and marches north over the next six weeks. The first rain is celebrated like a holiday. Children run outside, adults stand on balconies, and the smell of wet earth (petrichor) is called "mitti ki khushboo" and is the most nostalgic smell in the Indian lexicon. The monsoon is not weather. It is an event. . 2026: Mar 4. 2027: Mar 23.
