In the old Icelandic calendar, summer begins in April, not June. The first Thursday after April 18th is the First Day of Summer, and it is a national holiday. The paradox of celebrating summer when it is still freezing and snowing is not lost on anyone, but the optimism is charming. Children receive summer gifts, which used to be more exciting than Christmas gifts because summer meant freedom.
