The last shopping day before Christmas. Icelanders eat fermented skate (skata), a dish so pungent that restaurants are allowed to serve it only on this day. The skate is buried in the yard to ferment, and the smell fills the entire neighborhood. The tradition is to eat the skate, drink a shot of brennivÃn (caraway schnapps), and then air out the house for three days.
