Canadian Halloween is American Halloween with colder weather. The costumes are the same but the coats go over them. Halloween is a recent import to Iceland, adopted with enthusiasm but without deep roots. Children dress up and trick-or-treat, but the tradition competes with Oskudagur (Ash Wednesday), which already has a costume-and-candy tradition. Some families celebrate both, which means the children get double the candy and the parents get double the sugar crashes.
