The 13 Yule Lads arrive one per night, starting December 12th. Each lad has a name and a habit: Stekkjastaur (Sheep-Cote-Clod), Giljagaur (Gully-Gawk), Stufur (Stubby), Thvorusleikir (Spoon-Licker), Pottaskefill (Pot-Scraper), Askasleikir (Bowl-Licker), Hurðaskellir (Door-Slammer), Skyrgamur (Skyr-Gobbler), Bjúgnakrækir (Sausage-Swiper), Gluggagægir (Window-Peeper), Gáttaþefur (Doorway-Sniffer), Ketkrókur (Meat-Hook), and Kertasnikir (Candle-Stealer). Children leave a shoe in the window. Good behavior earns a small gift. Bad behavior earns a potato. The Lads leave one by one after Christmas, the last departing on January 6th.
