On October 23, 1956, Hungarians rose up against Soviet rule. The revolution lasted 12 days. The Soviet tanks returned on November 4th. 2,500 Hungarians died. 200,000 fled. The day is marked with speeches, flag-raisings, and the reading of the 16 Points that the revolution demanded. The Points are still relevant.
On October 23, the reburial of Imre Nagy, the prime minister executed in 1958 for his role in the 1956 revolution, is remembered. His body was buried in an unmarked grave for 31 years. In 1989, he was reburied with full honors. 200,000 people attended. The funeral is considered the beginning of the end of communism in Hungary.
