The darkest day of the old calendar, before the solstice resets the light. Hungarian tradition says that on Luca's Day, you should not lend anything, because the borrower will use it to cast a spell on you. Women were not allowed to work, because spinning on Luca's Day would bring bad luck. The prohibition on work has not survived, but the prohibition on lending has.
The tradition says that if a girl starts carving a chair on Luca's Day and finishes it by Christmas, she can stand on it in church and see which of the men there will be her husband. The chair must be carved from 13 types of wood. The tradition is archaic, the carving is real, and the church has not officially approved.
