Krampusz

The Krampus is Mikulas's shadow, a horned, furry creature with a switch and a sack. In the old tradition, the Krampus would threaten to take naughty children away in his sack. In the modern tradition, he hands out virgacs and looks disappointed. The Austrian version is terrifying. The Hungarian version is merely intimidating.

Mikulas Nap

Mikulas arrives on December 6th with a red robe, a bishop's hat, and a devil assistant named Krampusz. Good children get candy and nuts in their boots. Bad children get a bundle of twigs (virgacs) and a piece of coal. Most children get a little of both, because no child is entirely good or entirely bad.

Animals of British Indian Ocean Territory Day

You discover that the British Indian Ocean Territory is home to hawksbill sea turtles, manta rays, and numerous seabird species including frigatebirds and boobies. You observe that residents primarily keep cats and dogs as pets, with occasional ornamental fish. ACADA celebrates the world's pets, and helps assure better care.
