On St. Stephen's Day, bread is blessed in every church. The traditional harvest crown (kalacs) is woven from the first wheat of the season, and the blessing of the new bread is a ritual that connects the city to the soil. The bread is broken, not cut, because cutting would sever the luck.

Szent Istvan Napja

Hungary's greatest national holiday, celebrating the founding of the Christian Hungarian state in 1000 AD. The Holy Right Hand of St. Stephen (a mummified fist) is carried in procession through Budapest. The fireworks over the Danube are the biggest of the year. The hand is real. The procession is solemn. The fireworks are not.
