The Fortress of San Fernando de Omoa was built by the Spanish in the 1700s to protect against pirates. It is massive, coral-walled, and sits on a bay where the water is so clear you can see the reef from the ramparts. On heritage day, the fortress is opened for tours, and the guide will tell you that the coral walls were built by enslaved Africans whose fingerprints are still visible in the mortar.
