On the north coast, Garifuna communities celebrate with drumming that starts at dawn and does not stop until the last dancer drops. The meal is machuca: coconut soup with mashed plantain and fried fish, eaten with the hands from a shared bowl. The first drum is called the primera, and its rhythm calls the ancestors.
