Virgen de Suyapa

Honduras's patron saint is a wooden statue barely six centimeters tall, found in a field in 1747 by a farmer named Alejandro Colindres. He fell asleep under a tree, felt something hard under his shirt, and found the tiny virgin. The basilica in Suyapa holds two million pilgrims a year. Some walk for days. Some crawl the last kilometer on their knees. The virgin has been stolen, recovered, and nearly destroyed by fire. She always comes back.
