World Calendar Day

World Good Neighbor Hello Day

A day for the first greeting, the open door, and the small courtesies that make streets, villages, apartments, and shops feel human.

Dia de Santiago — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

Dia de Santiago

The patron saint of Santiago Atitlan, one of the most important Maya towns on Lake Atitlan. The cofrades carry the saints, the marimba sounds across the water, and the traditional dance of the conquest is performed. It is a celebration of survival. The Maya dance the conquest not to celebrate it but to remember it, and to remember that they are still here, still dancing, still Tz'utujil.

Dia del Correo — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

Dia del Correo

A day that commemorates a service that exists more in theory than in practice in Guatemala. If you need to send a letter, you give it to someone who is taking the bus to that town. This is the real Guatemalan postal system: trust and chicken buses.

Feria de Santiago Atitlan — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

Feria de Santiago Atitlan

The patron saint festival of Santiago Atitlan on Lake Atitlan. The cofradia carries the saints through the streets, the marimba plays for three days straight, the firecrackers start before dawn, and the entire town dances in the square until the saints are tired and the people are tireder. The lake watches. The volcanoes watch. Nothing changes. Everything changes.
