In the highlands, communities raise crosses decorated with flowers and ribbons. The day marks the beginning of the rainy season, whether the rain agrees or not. In Santiago Atitlan, it is one of the most important celebrations of the year. The marimba plays until the cross nods, which is to say, until dawn.
