Dia del Trabajo — World Calendar Day
World Calendar Day

Dia del Trabajo

National holiday. Workers march through the streets, unions gather, and the speeches echo off the mountains in La Paz. In Bolivia, labor rights are personal because nearly everyone has a family member who works in the mines, the fields, or the informal economy that keeps this country breathing.

Fete du Travail — World Calendar Day
World Calendar Day

Fete du Travail

National holiday. Workers march, unions speak, and the streets fill with banners. But the real celebration is the shared meals that follow, because in Burkina every gathering ends with food and every holiday ends with to and dgounda on a shared plate.

Yawm al-Ummal — World Calendar Day
World Calendar Day

Yawm al-Ummal

National holiday. The workers who built the skyline, the causeway, the circuits. A day off and a reminder that every glass tower stands on human hands.

Maibaum Aufstellen — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

Maibaum Aufstellen

In Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg, the Maibaum, a tall painted tree trunk, is raised in the village center. The colors indicate the region: blue and white for Bavaria, red and white for Baden-Wuerttemberg. The raising requires a crew of men, ropes, and Schwegelbiera. The neighboring villages will try to steal it. The defending villagers will sit with it all night. The tree is worth a war.

Tag der Arbeit — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

Tag der Arbeit

National holiday. Trade union demonstrations fill the streets in the morning. In Berlin-Kreuzberg, the night before, Walpurgisnacht riots have become tradition. The contrast between the orderly May 1 march and the chaotic April 30 night is Germany in miniature: organized protest by day, organized chaos by night.
