World Community Noticeboard Day

A day for posters, bulletins, group chats, school papers, parish notes, and the local news that actually changes a day.

Fete de la Musique — World Calendar Day
World Calendar Day

Fete de la Musique

Live music in every square and intersection. Djembe circles, kora players, hip-hop crews, and balafon groups all compete for attention. Ouaga becomes an open-air concert and nobody asks for a ticket. The music starts at sunset and the neighbors never complain because the neighbors are playing too.

Nikolausmarkt — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

Nikolausmarkt

The weekend after Nikolaustag, the Weinachtsmarkt is in full swing. The children are still eating their Nikolausschokolade. The adults are drinking their third Gluhwein. The Stollen is being sliced. The Gebrannte Mandeln are being scooped. The Reibekuchen, the fried potato cakes, are being served with Apfelmus. The Weinachtsmarkt is not a market. The Weinachtsmarkt is a temporary village of warmth, sugar, and light.

Platzchenbacken — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

Platzchenbacken

The Vanillekipferl, the crescent-shaped vanilla cookie, is the foundation. The Zimtsterne, the cinnamon star, is required. The Spitzbuben, the jam-filled sandwich cookie, is traditional. The Kokosmakronen, the coconut macaroons, are the easiest. The Ausstecherle, the cut-out cookies, are the children's job. The Torte plate, the cookie plate, must have at least five varieties. Anything less is not Weihnachten. It is just winter.
