On this day in 1978, thousands of Georgians marched in Tbilisi to defend the Georgian language after the Soviet government proposed removing its official status. The protest worked. The law was not changed. The language remained. The thirty-three letters of the Georgian alphabet are one of only fourteen independent writing systems on Earth. The alphabet is not borrowed. The alphabet is not adapted. The alphabet is Georgian.
