Na Siga Ni Yaqona Vou

Proposed. The first kava harvest of the season is brought to the village. The plants have been growing for three to five years. The roots are pulled, dried, and pounded. The first mix of the new yaqona is served to the chief first, then the elders, then the community. The taste of new kava is sharper, greener, stronger. The numbing effect is immediate. The village nods in approval. The new season has begun.

Na Tovuto Ni Tohora

Seasonal. Humpback whales pass through Fijian waters on their migration, and the villages on Taveuni and Vanua Levu can see them breaching from shore. The old stories say the whales are ancestors returning. The young people just think they are magnificent. Either way, the sight of a whale off the reef stops conversation, stops work, and reminds every Fijian that the ocean is bigger than any story told about it.
