Na Duruka

Seasonal. The duruka, the unopened flower shoot of the sugarcane plant, appears for a brief window each year. It looks like a thin green reed, it tastes like asparagus met sugarcane, and cooked in coconut cream it is one of Fiji's most beloved seasonal dishes. The window is short. The coconut wireless announces it. The village women harvest it before the sun gets high.

Close-up of running shoes and legs outdoors on stone steps, perfect for sport and lifestyle themes.

Na Uto Ni Dina

Seasonal. The uto, the breadfruit, is the tree that keeps on giving. When it fruits, the entire village eats. It is roasted in the lovo, boiled in coconut cream, or eaten fresh with fish. The breadfruit tree outside the village hall is communal property. When the fruit is ready, everyone takes what they need. No money changes hands. This is the way it has always been. This is the vanua.
