Abebe Bikila Day

On this day in 1964, Abebe Bikila won the Olympic marathon in Tokyo, just 40 days after having his appendix removed. He won the 1960 Rome Olympic marathon running barefoot through the streets of Rome. An Ethiopian, running barefoot, through ancient Rome, winning gold. The symbolism was not lost on anyone. The appendix was not going to stop him either.
