In rural Eswatini, cattle dipping is a community event. The tank is filled. The cattle are driven in. The chemicals kill the ticks. The cattle splash and bellow. The men stand around and talk about cattle. Everything is discussed at the dip: the weather, the crops, the lobola, the chief's latest pronouncement. The dip is the parliament of the rural areas.

Before the rains come, the communities that still build traditional roundavels cut grass for thatching. The grass is long, golden, and cut by hand with sickles. The women carry bundles on their heads. The men tie the bundles to the roof. The roundavel goes up in a day. The whole community helps. The whole community eats. The whole community is the construction crew.
