National holiday. The demera bonfires are lit in every town square. Priests in full regalia lead processions. The bonfire in Asmara's Bahti Meskerem square draws thousands. The flames represent the light that led Empress Helena to the True Cross. The fire burns high. The singing is loud. The children carry small crosses woven from meskel daisies.
