Mokolo ya Balobi

National holiday. Commemorates the victims of colonial repression, especially those who fell on January 4, 1959, when protests in Kinshasa (then Leopoldville) were met with violence. This is the day the Congo told Belgium the waiting was over. Schools close, ceremonies are held, and the older generation tells the young ones what independence cost.
