The church goes dark. The priest emerges with the holy light. Every candle in every hand is lit from one flame. The "Christos Anesti" fills the church, and then the streets, and then the neighborhood. Fireworks go off, the fast is broken with magiritsa (Easter soup), and every Cypriot who has not eaten meat for 50 days is weeping with joy.
