Also Greek Independence Day. In Cyprus, this is a double celebration: the angel told Mary she was pregnant, and the Greeks told the Ottomans they were independent. The church bells ring and the schoolchildren march, and the yiayia makes bakaliaros (cod) even though it is Lent, because the Annunciation is one of the days when fish is allowed.
