Dia di Nason

National holiday. The birthday of Amilcar Cabral, the father of Cape Verdean independence. Born September 12, 1924, in Bafata, Guinea-Bissau, but Cape Verde claims him as its own. Schools close, speeches are given, and every Cape Verdean remembers that freedom was not free. Cabral was assassinated before he saw independence but his words built the nation.
