Labour Day

The first Friday in June when Bahamian workers march through Nassau with union banners, brass bands, and a deep pride in the struggles that built the nation. The parade winds through downtown and ends with speeches, food, and a whole lot of storytelling about the old labor movement. After the formalities, it is a cookout, a beach day, and a reminder that every right on the books came from somebody who stood up first.

Jour du Portage

The canoe is Canada's national vehicle. It carried explorers, fur traders, and weekend warriors across every lake and river in the country. The paddling is peaceful. The portage, which is what Canadians call carrying a heavy thing through the woods while being eaten by insects, is less peaceful. Every Canadian has a canoe story and every canoe story ends with someone falling in.

Animals of Svalbard and Jan Mayen Day

You observe the Arctic wildlife of Svalbard and Jan Mayen including polar bears, Arctic foxes, and walruses in this high northern region. You find that the sparse human population keeps sled dogs, reindeer, and occasionally Arctic foxes as domestic animals. ACADA celebrates the world's pets, and helps assure better care.
