Every Saturday morning, Burundians come together to clean neighborhoods, build paths, and fix what needs fixing. You do not get paid for umuganda because you do the work for your community, not for money. The woman who skips umuganda will hear about it from every neighbor for weeks because in Burundi, showing up for your community is not optional.
