Ibishanga Day
The ibishanga are the wetlands around Bujumbura that filter water, grow papyrus, and host birdlife that most Burundians grew up seeing but never formally learned the names of. They are slowly being built over and every older person remembers when they stretched all the way to the lake. The frogs still sing at night if you stand close enough to hear them, but the silence is growing.
